BGFIBANK was created in Libreville in April 1971 by partnership between Gabonese privates and the Paris Netherlands Bank (BANQUE DE PARIS ET DES PAYS-BAS), under the denomination of BANQUE DE PARIS ET DES PAYS-BAS Gabon Paris and the Netherlands Bank of Gabon. The economic development at the dawn of the boom oil motivated the creation of the Port-Gentil branch in the Gabonese economic capital in January 1977. Pursuing its expansion, the Paris and the Netherlands Bank Gabon installed itself in August 1992 in the harbour zone in Owendo for a better proximity policy. Considering the major part of the capital detained by the Gabonese privates, the bank was rebaptized in 1996 (la Banque Gabonaise et Francaise Internationale) the International Gabonese French Bank since March 17th 2000, it became BGFI to favour its international implantation. On April 3rd 2000, the BGFIBANK has materialized its international development policy by the creation in the Republic of Congo, of its first implantation abroad under the form of a branch BGFIBANK Congo in Brazzaville. In November 23rd 2000, the Central African Bank Commission (Committee) has approved the opening of BGFIBANK Equatorial Guineai, whose head office was inaugurated in June 18th, 2001in Malabo. In January 18th, 2001, BGFIBANK opened a branch in Pointe-Noire, in the Republic of Congo. In March 2001, in the framework of its banking activities, BGFIBANK signed a partnership with Western Union International and created agencies network BGFIBANK/WESTERN UNION. The most expanded in Gabon. In November 2001, the BGFIBANK launched an increase of its capital in order to accompany its national and international development and reinforce the good observation of the current rules in relation to the proper funds and to the solvency. In November 24th 2001, the BGFIBANK inaugurated the branch in Moanda to reinforce its national network. In January 2002, BGFIBANK branch in Congo got agreement of Western Union International for the launching of two branches in Congo whose opening took place in February and March 2003 in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire.
