The foundation of Ecobank can be traced to the early 1980's when the Federation of West Africa Chambers of Commerce initiated a project to establish a West Africa private-sector regional bank. This led to the formation of Ecopromotions in August 1984. Its founder shareholders provided the seed capital for the initial feasibility studies and evaluation work and promotional activities for the formation of Ecobank. In 1985, Ecobank Transnational incorporated ("ETI") was established with the approval of the member states of the Economic Community of West African States as the first bank holding company in West Africa with 1200 shareholders from 14 countries. It commenced operations with its first subsidiary in Togo in March 1988. Twelve years on, the Ecobank Group is now a full-service regional banking institution with 57 branches and offices in 12 countries across West Africa. EDC is the investment finance and advisory arm of the Ecobank Group. EDC focuses on large financing needs of governments and private sector businesses in West and Central Africa. In the performance of its task, Edc will strive to assist the development of Ecobank's capital markets business and in the growth of the financial advisory business of the sub-region. On acase-by-case basis, EDC will however avail itself to specific opportunities outside West and Central Africa.
