Comoros joined the World Bank in 1976. Since then, World Bank assistance on 19 projects has helped the country work towards achieving sustainable economic growth, developing human capital and reducing poverty. As of March 2004, active projects with a commitment value of approximately US$33.2 million include: Health Project: a US$8.4 million project which seeks to reduce mortality from common diseases by ensuring a better use of health facilities for the delivery of quality health care, and by organizing mosquito control activities to reduce the incidence of malaria... Services Support Project: a US$13.3 million projects which seeks to maintain basic social and economic infrastructure for a significant number of disadvantaged communities and specific vulnerable groups... Social Fund Project: a US$11.5 million project with the objective to address the incidence of poverty in the countrys poorer communities. This will be done through the replenishment of a social fund designed to support demand-driven initiatives developed by such communities and, in doing so, to create employment and improve access to basic social services...
