The Republic of Congo joined the World Bank in 1963. Since then, World Bank assistance on 34 projects has focused on helping the country build capacity of government, promote economic growth and reduce poverty. Support from the Bank was temporarily suspended, however re-engaged with a Transitional Support Strategy (January 2001 and August 2003) which provided funding for some of the following projects: HIV/AIDS and Health Project: a US$19 million project which seeks slow the spread of HIV-AIDS and strengthen support and care for people infected or affected by HIV-AIDS. Emergency Recovery and Community Support Project: a US$41 million project that aims to support recovery of communities located in smaller municipalities and rural areas (i.e., all areas out of the two cities of Brazzaville and Pointe Noire). It will provide targeted capacity-building support to help implement economic reforms which are critical for the revitalization of the local economy.
Emergency Infrastructure Rehabilitation and Living Conditions Improvement Project: a US$40 million project with the objective to rehabilitate key infrastructure (including portions of the key railroad link, roads, and health facilities) and help mitigate unemployment issues through a variety of labor-intensive micro-projects.
