The Democratic Republic of Congo joined the World Bank in 1963. Since then, World Bank assistance on 81 projects has helped the country work towards achieving improved governance, economic growth and a reduction in poverty. As of April 2005, seven active projects with a commitment value of approximately US$1.25 billion include: Multi Sectoral HIV/AIDS Project: a US$102 million project that will implement the national strategic plan for HIV/AIDS control activities and provide resources to improve service delivery mechanisms to better the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS. Post Conflict Economic Recovery Credit: a US$200 million credit, consistent with the Banks Transitional Support Strategy (pdf), which aims to assist the country in its economic and social recovery. Emergency Economic and Social Reunification Support Project: a US$214 million credit that will facilitate the implementation of urgent reforms in critical areas including initiating a civil service reform. This project will help the government deal with the country’s debt situation. Private Sector Development and Competitiveness Project: a US$120 million operation that aims to increase the competitiveness of the economy, and thereby contribute to economic growth.
