Guinea-Bissau joined the World Bank in 1977. Since then, World Bank assistance on 30 projects has focused on helping the country promote economic growth and reduce poverty. As of January 2005, current World Bank-supported projects include: Private Sector Rehabilitation and Development Project: a US$26 million project which seeks to support increased investment, competitiveness, and participation of the private sector in economic activity. Economic Rehabilitation and Recovery Credit: a US$25 million project which will provide urgent financing to support the governments National Reconciliation and Reconstruction Program. The specific objectives of the program are to support peace building, promote the revival of the economy, and encourage the pursuit of reforms to reduce poverty. National Health Development Program Project: a US$11.7 million project with the goal of improving the health status and well-being of the population, particularly women and children, by strengthening all levels of the national health system, including health services and facilities, and management structures and processes.
