Lao Peoples Democratic Republic (Laos) is a landlocked country within the Greater Mekong region of Indo-china, to the north east of Thailand. In 1986 Laos began to move away from a centrally planned economy with the introduction of the New Economic Mechanism (NEM), which involved decentralising control and encouraging private enterprise. Starting from a very low base, growth has averaged 7.5% since 1988. However, being landlocked and with a very weak infrastructure - no railroads, a rudimentary road system and limited external and internal telecommunications - the country does not have a competitive edge over its neighbouring countries. The economy will continue to depend much on international aid for the foreseeable future. We can offer offshore accounts and remittances for non-governmental organisations. The unit of currency in Laos is the KIP (SWIFT Code LAK). Standard Chartered fully understands the importance of time, convenience and efficiency to the success of your business.
