Madagascar joined the World Bank in 1963. Since then, World Bank assistance on 116 projects has helped the country work towards achieving improved governance, economic growth and a reduction in poverty. As of January 2005, 26 active projects with a commitment value of approximately US$954.1 million include: Third Environment Program Support Project: a US$40 million project which aims at expanding Madagascar s protected areas network to include key missing habitats, establishing conservation sites in natural forests and transferring forest management responsibilities to communities. Governance and Institutional Development Project: a US$30 operation that will assist the Government of Madagascar to rationalize and modernize budget and public expenditure management, improve accountability and transparency of government operations, and strengthen the capacity of public institutions. Mineral Resources Governance Project: a US$32 million project with the objective of strengthening governance and transparency in the management of mineral resources with an emphasis on small-scale and artisanal mining.
