Mauritania joined the World Bank in 1963. Since then, World Bank assistance on 69 projects has helped the country promote economic growth and reduce poverty. As of January, there were 20 World Bank projects underway. Active projects include: Community Based Rural Development Project: a US$45 million project with the objective to improve the living conditions of village communities, in terms of sustainable income increase, access to basic socio-economic services, and improved natural resource management practices. Second Mining Sector Capacity Building Project: a US$18 million project, which, like the successful on-going Mining Sector Capacity Building Project, aims to strengthen the Governments capacity to act as a facilitator and regulator of mining activities and to significantly increase private investment in Mauritanias mining sector. Multi-Sector HIV/AIDS Control Project: a US$21 million operation which seeks to maintain the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection that causes AIDS, below the prevalence rate of 1 percent, and reduce opportunistic infections in Mauritania citizens.
