Niger joined the World Bank in 1963. Since then, World Bank assistance on 65 projects has helped the country work towards achieving improved governance, economic growth and a reduction in poverty. As of February 2005, 10 active projects with a commitment value of approximately US$220 million include: Basic Education Project: a US$30 million project which aims to increase enrollment and completion in basic education programs and strengthen management at all levels by improving the use of existing resources, focusing on rural areas to achieve greater equity and poverty reduction in the medium to long term. Multi-Sector STI/HIV/AIDS Support Project: a US$25 million multi-country project in Africa with the objective to strengthen preventive measures so as to slow the spread of HIV/AIDS, and expand support, and care for those infected, or affected by the epidemic.
