One name. The vision of two men. John Ryan. A bond buyer who, in the early 1940s, left the security of a position with Lehman Brothers to take the reins of a small but promising investment banking firm. Roy Beck. A young bond salesman who saw the future in helping a budding company grow. It grewand continues to grow. In its earliest days, John J. Ryan & Co. focused on underwriting and distributing tax-exempt municipal bonds. In 1951, John Ryan and Roy Beck met during a bid for a Monmouth County bond issue. Although neither won the bid, they gained something more valuable: a partnership for success. Over time, the company grew. While the bank stock business expanded, the municipal trading department did as well. In 1966, the Firm was named a co-manager of the New Jersey Turnpike’s $179 million bond financing, the first New Jersey firm to be so named. That appointment confirmed the Firm’s future as the premier underwriter of municipal bonds in the state. The 1970s witnessed continued growth, through increases in the retail sales force, bank stock business, municipal bond underwriting and corporate finance. Ryan Beck turned the turbulence of the 1980s into opportunityand the Firm and its clients prospered.
