NEFE - National Endowment for Financial Education

Category: Financial education and training. Country: United States (USA). The National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) foundation dedicated to helping all Americans acquire the information and gain the skills necessary to take control of their personal finances. NEFE accomplishes its mission primarily by partnering with other concerned organizations to provide financial education to members of the public-in particular, to underserved individuals whose financial education issues are not being addressed by others. These partnerships are an effective means of responding to the needs of many different groups within the general population. In all of its partnerships, NEFE functions as an active participant by providing funding, as well as the logistical support and financial planning expertise needed to create personal finance programs and materials for the public. NEFE also underwrites grants, fellowships, and research projects; and it facilitates the exploration of new ideas in the field of personal financial planning by sponsoring events for professionals throughout the financial services industry. All of the organization’s activities are driven by NEFE Initiatives, which have been established to advance the foundation’s public-service mission. These initiatives are developed as significant financial education needs are identified within the public at large, or among subsets of the general population. The National Endowment is composed of four distinct areas that define the foundation’s scope and guide its activities. These areas include: Education Programs; incorporating the NEFE High School Financial Planning Program (HSFPP); Collaborative Programs; Multimedia Access; and Innovative Thinking. New activities in these areas are covered in each issue of our bimonthly newsletter, NEFE Digest. To meet NEFE’s president and CEO, click on President’s Message for a direct link. Members of the media and other interested visitors can find press releases and a wealth of feature articles on personal finance topics in NEFE News. Although not restricted to a particular age group, the Education Programs area has focused largely on increasing financial literacy among the nation’s youth. This focus is exemplified by the organization’s longest-standing public service effort, the NEFE High School Financial Planning Program (HSFPP). The innovative HSFPP uses contemporary materials to teach the basics of personal finance to young people while they are developing habits and attitudes about money that will influence them for the rest of their lives. It is based on the philosophy that learning about money is as important as earning it- and that effective money management results from a disciplined behavior, which is most easily mastered if learned early in life. This practical and objective program is available at no cost to all high schools throughout the country. (Click on the highlighted term above for more information about the NEFE High School Financial Planning Program.)...
