What is the difference among the CMA, CGA and CA designations? If you think of accounting as a spectrum of services with public accounting, audit and tax on one end, and accounting in industry and government on the other, the difference between the three Canadian accounting bodies can easily be identified. The CA program focuses on tax and assurance, and CA students are typically employed in public practice while receiving their training. The CGA designation is more general in its approach, providing technical instruction in financial and management accounting, tax and audit. The CMA designation provides an education that goes beyond the mastery of technical skills to allow real world implementation. CMAs in addition to being trained in all facets of general accounting, receive specialized training in management accounting. The increased importance of management accounting, which uses both financial and non-financial information to direct strategic, tactical and operational decision-making, can be attributed to the changing needs of business today. A Brief History of CMABC. The Canadian Society of Cost Accountants was incorporated by Letters Patent under the Dominion Companies Act in 1920. From the beginning, courses of study in cost accounting and business organization were offered and success on examinations led to certification. However, it became evident that if a standard of competence were to be maintained and recognized, it would be necessary to issue a qualifying designation. Since provincial governments have jurisdiction over education, it was necessary to secure their approval through provincial legislation. In 1941 Societies were incorporated in Ontario and Quebec with authority to conduct courses, to set examinations, and to grant the RIA (Registered Industrial Accountant) designation. For the designation to have national recognition and reciprocity, enabling legislation was proposed in all other provinces.
